When it comes to acne, hormones can be a large culprit for breakouts.  Luckily, there are options available for those who suffer hormonal breakouts.

If you’re a woman with acne hormones, there’s the option of taking a birth control pill to reduce your breakouts and lower the severity of breakouts.  Clearer skin is a common side effect with hormonal birth control options.

Teens and women in their early twenties often find themselves battling acne because their hormones are all out of control.  By taking birth control pills, hormones are balanced.  Most people do not take the pill for acne, but as a way to protect themselves from pregnancy.  However, clear skin is often an added bonus.

If you are a smoker, you should not take the pill because the pill can increase the risk of certain cancers and stroke.

If the pill works for clearing your skin, you will no longer need to apply tropical creams or take antibiotics.  If your doctor suggests you take antibiotics while taking the pill, make sure to use a backup method of birth control.  Antibiotics will reduce the effectiveness of the pill so there is a chance of getting pregnant.

Sometimes there are negative side effects to the pill, but it’s usually rare.  Some of the side effects most commonly experienced are nausea and vomiting.  Making sure to eat a full meal with your pill can often make these symptoms more tolerable if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones.

Some other side effects are irregular periods and weight gain.

The pill is definitely worth trying and most women do see clearer skin within a couple weeks.  Talk to your doctor and choose a birth control pill that works best for you and your acne hormones will be under control soon.
